Child abuse involves willfully inflicting cruel or inhuman physical punishment causing a traumatic condition, without reasonable discipline.

In California, it is punishable by up to 1 year in county jail and a $6,000 fine as a misdemeanor or up to 6 years in prison if charged as a felony.
