Embezzlement

Embezzlement occurs when someone in a position of trust is entrusted with money or property and intends to take it for personal use.
Penalties depend on the value:

Less than $950: Petty theft embezzlement, punishable by up to 6 months in county jail and a $1,000 fine.
Less than $50: May be reduced to an infraction, punishable by a $250 fine.
$950 or more: Grand theft embezzlement, punishable by 16 months to 3 years in state prison and fines up to $10,000.
